Green Century believes that protecting wilderness and the species that live there is critical for both economic and environmental sustainability. For several years, we focused on the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and will continue to raise concerns over fossil fuel extraction from protected places. Green Century also pressures companies to engage in "smart growth." We believe that development should be done in a way that does not harm the environment, preserves open space, and engages stakeholders and the community.
2009-2010 Issue:
- Sustainable Seafood Procurement - Marine biologists and ocean experts around the world have reached the conclusion that our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them are in peril, threatened by climate change, habitat destruction, and overfishing. However, seafood continues to be a popular choice for American consumers, exacerbating the threatened state of many species. Supermarkets and other retailers sell about 50% of all seafood purchased by American consumers and traditionally bring in about $16 billion a year from selling fish and other seafood products. To ensure a healthy ocean for future generations, Green Century is encouraging supermarkets to adopt sustainable seafood procurement policies and embrace other practices that protect ocean ecosystems.
